The reality of the creator economy is rarely what you see on a curated feed.
Social Folk Founder & CEO Hannah Saycell, Speaking and Hosting at Social Day Fest 2026
At this year's Social Media Fest, I had the absolute pleasure of speaking and hosting ‘The Creator Reality Check’ alongside brilliant creators Omobolaji Ajibare, Stevie Yessaian, and Quincy Washington.
Between them they have millions of followers across YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and Snap.
Running a global influencer agency like Social Folk whilst navigating my own content journey means I am constantly looking at this digital ecosystem from both sides. Getting to step back, compare notes, and hear raw creator perspectives on the industry was incredibly valuable.
We didn't focus on the superficial metrics or viral highlights. Instead, we pulled back the curtain on the actual reality of building a sustainable career online.
Here are the four key takeaways from our conversation that every brand and creator needs to navigate right now.
1. Navigating Creator Burnout and the Consistency Trap
The pressure to feed the algorithm is one of the biggest drivers of creator burnout. There is a toxic industry narrative that you must post multiple times a day to stay relevant. Our panel agreed that true sustainability comes from shifting focus away from volume and toward high-value, high-impact content that truly resonates with a core audience.
2. Surviving Algorithm Slumps
When views drop, it is easy to take it personally. Algorithm slumps happen to everyone, even top-tier creators. The secret to surviving them is building a community that actively seeks out your profile, rather than relying entirely on algorithmic discoverability or the For You Page.
3. Diversifying Influencer Monetisation
Relying solely on platform creator funds or unpredictable brand deals is a risky business strategy. Long-term financial sustainability requires creators to think like business owners. This means diversifying revenue streams through digital products, brand equity partnerships, paid newsletters, or consulting.
4. Scaling When Content Takes Off
Going viral is exciting, but scaling a brand after a spike in traffic is where the real work begins. Creators need robust backend systems, from professional talent management to legal and accounting support, to turn a fleeting viral moment into a scalable entity.
Community First, No Fluff
Massive congratulations to the whole SocialDay team for putting on such a fantastic event. It remains one of my absolute favourite industry milestones because it is genuinely built for the people doing the actual work in social media marketing every single day.
